Gold toothpicks that are more than 5,000 years old have been found in ancient places in the Middle East. in the 1700s, toothbrushes were made from twigs, plant roots, or animal hairs. The kind of toothbrush most of us use now wasn't invented until 1938. 3 In the past, most products for cleaning teeth were powders. These powders were usually made from plants and were mixed with honey or vegetable oils. Powdered charcoal, chalk, or baking soda were also added to the mixture. 4 Now, dental scientists know that germs and bacteria are the worst enemies of our teeth and gums. Modern toothpastes and gels contain materials that help stop the growth of these tiny enemies. Toothpastes today also taste better than those old powders did. Toothpaste companies add flavors to improve the taste without harming your teeth. Peppermint-flavored products taste the best. 5 It's a good idea to limit the amount of candy and other sweets you eat and drink. Doing this will help you get fewer cavities. It is believed that the most important thing you can do to fight disease in your mouth is to brush and floss at least twice a day, every day.
