2009 Ch 12 Map: America Moves West - Late

The United States grew by leaps and bounds over its first 120 years of nationhood. Beginning with only 13 English colonies, the United States grew until its boundaries stretched "from sea to shining sea"- and beyond. The addition of Alaska and Hawaii added more territory. Today, the U.S. is the fourth largest country in the world. Only Russia, Canada, and China are larger. The map at the following link shows how the U.S. increased in size. It also shows some of the most heavily used trails taken by settlers moving west in the 1800s. Use the following two maps, an atlas, and the map in the classroom to answer the following questions.
