Maya's Big Move Comprehension

The Colon family was moving from New York City to Miami. Maya did not want to leave and have to make new friends elsewhere. Her friends in New York were just fine. Boxes were everywhere and friends were in and out.

Maya packed her books as tears slid down her face, "I do not want to move to Miami," she sobbed.

Her father came in and gave her a hug, "Maya," he said, "this is a good move for the whole family. I have a new job. We will live near all our relatives and be able to see them more often.

"I still don't want to go," Maya said stubbornly. "Who will play soccer with me, ride bikes with me and sit next to me in class?" Tears streamed from Maya's eyes as she packed her toys and clothes.

Soon, they arrived at their new house in Miami. "How beautiful!" her mother exclaimed as she looked at the street. The palm trees moving in the breeze and the clear blue sky. "Feel the sun on our skin! Isn't it wonderful, Maya?"

But Maya would not talk to anyone. "I will not like it here," she said to herself.

Relatives and neighbors cam to welcome them to their new home. Some brought big green plants and bright flowers. Many people brought platters of food.

Later the doorbell rang. When Maya opened the front door a group of smiling children were there. One tall girl with dark braids said, "My name is Esme. Would you like to play with us?"

Maya did not know what to say. She wanted to be with her friends back in New York. Then she saw one boy holding a soccer ball.

"Are you going to play soccer?" she asked shyly.

"Yes," answered Esme. "Come on, it'll be fun. The soccer field is just down the street." Maya's mom said that she could go, so they all rode their bikes down the street and played soccer all afternoon.

The next day, they came back again. They walked with Maya to school, Esme sat next to Maya in class. Later that night, Maya's parents asked her how she liked Miami.

"I love Miami!" Maya said. Her parents just smiled.
