Lizzie's Tail

Lizzie Lizard leaped out of bed. The first thing she did was wiggle her colorful tail. Lizzie was proud of her tail, but she also had another reason to be happy. Exactly three months ago, she had hatched. She hoped her desert friends were planning a surprise hatchday party for her. "I can't wait," she said.

Lizzie crawled from her dark burrow into the bright light of the Texas sun. She began looking for some yummy bugs for breakfast. After Lizzie had eaten, she climbed on top of a rock to nap. Suddenly, a dark shadow hovered over her. It was her enemy, the raptor Rap.

The large bird swooped down and tried to capture Lizzie. She scooted away, running down and under the rock. On the way, Lizzie suddenly bumped her tail, "Oh, no!" she cried. A piece of her tail had broken off. Lizzie began to sob loudly.

"Who's making that racket?" someone howled. Lizzie peeked out from under the rock. It was her friend, Squeak, the deer mouse.

"I broke my tail," Lizzie howled. "It was supposed to be such a wonderful day, but now it's absolutely ruined.

"Relax," Squeak said. "It's not the end of the world."

"Yes it is," Lizzie said. "My tail helps me move. How will I find food? How will I escape from Rap? And watch what happens when I try to lift my head." Lizzie tumbled over unto her side. She began to cry again.

"Your tail will regenerate," Squeak said as he helped Lizzie up.

"What does that mean?" Lizzie cried.

"It means that your tail will grow back." answered Squeak.

Lizzie asked through her tears, "But how will I survive until then?

I'll help you," answered Squeak.

Finally, Lizzie stopped crying. "Thanks," she said.

"It's nothing," Squeak said. "Now, cheer up, because we've got a party to get to.!"
