Unit 2 Reading Study Guide: RL.7.1 & RL.72.

Stacia admitted, only to herself, that the moss on the tree was kind of gross. Luckily for her, there
were no other dendrologists with her, hanging 250 feet above the forest floor. No, there weren’t
any other tree scientists, just thousands of ants. The ants only bit her. They didn’t poke fun at her.
Though she still had 50 or so feet to go to get to the top of the tree, she pulled her tape measure
out of her knapsack. She wanted to be prepared. When she was five years old, Stacia dreamed
about climbing the big trees. Her parents said she would grow out of tree climbing.
That was a strange thing to say. She couldn’t imagine why she would stop going to the only
place she could be alone. It was different now that it was work. There was more intellectual
labor, and, because the trees were so tall, more physical labor, too. Aside from the occasional
bout of nausea that came from sitting on top of a 300 foot tall tree that was swaying in the wind,
it was still fun. She hooked the tape measure onto the highest branch, and, dropping it, watched it fall.
She adjusted her rope and harness and then jumped backwards. This time, she thought, I might beat
the tape measure to the ground!
