Kennedy-Johnson Review
The Presidential election of 1960 was held in an atmosphere of strained international relations and increasing racial tension in the United States. In an extremely close contest, Democrat John F. Kennedy and his running mate, Lyndon B. Johnson, defeated the Republican candidates, Richard M. Nixon and Henry Cabot Lodge. Kennedy was the first Roman Catholic and the youngest man to be elected President. Kennedy called upon Americans to meet the challenges of a "new frontier—the frontier of the 1960's. Issues including the Cuban Missile Crisis, Bay of Pigs and the space race dominated the foreign issues during his time as president. On the home front, issues of civil rights and the economy continued to exist. Unfortunately, President Kennedy’s life was cut short when he was assassinated by Lee Harvey Oswald. Upon succeeding to the Presidency, Johnson promised to continue Kennedy's foreign and domestic policies. In 1964 Johnson and his running mate, Hubert H. Humphrey, won election by a landslide, defeating Republican candidates Barry M. Goldwater and William E. Miller. Johnson pledged his administration to the task of building a "Great Society." This quiz was designed for you to give you practice on the Kennedy-Johnson era. This is one of the tensest times in the history of the United States. The Cold War was heating up and nuclear war was seemingly inevitable. Majority of the test questions are multiple choice. Personally this is one of the saddest moments in this country’s history as it lost a young strong leader. I hope you enjoy taking this as this part of US history finds its way into every history book. Good Luck!!! -Herschel Ambekar
