(1) Martin Luther King lived his life believing in equality for African Americans and he did some important things to make it happen. (2) He worked to eliminate discrimination on city buses. (3) For many years African American people were required to sit in the back of the bus. (4) He told his followers that if they were not allowed to sit in the front of the bus, they should refuse to ride the buses altogether! (5) So, many thousands of people boycotted the buses. (6) As a result, the United States Supreme Court passed a law against discrimination. (7) King had won a major battle without violence. (8) He also worked hard to get African American adults registered to v ote and students admitted to segregated schools. (9) Tragically his great work was cut short when he was assassinated in 1968.
