Holt Ch. 2 Section 3: Contour Maps PART II
When properly understood, topographic maps can be used to show the surface features of an area. Contour lines, a scale, and various symbols help to provide a realistic model of the actual geography of the area. In this investigation you will use a simplified topographic map to locate a downed pilot. READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY:
1. Pretend that you have received the following radio message from an aircraft."SOS . . . SOS. Come in New Hope, losing altitude, dropping . . . heading due north, altitude 3500 ft, over crossroads, now veering west, altitude now 3300 ft, ridge approaching, veering east, altitude 3200 ft ... must land..."
2. Use this information and the topographic map in Figure 1 to locate the pilot.
3. Trace the probable path taken by the pilot on the topographic map with your finger
4. Locate the most probable area in which to conduct the search.
