Pictograms
Pictograms are images or signs used to represent actual things or concepts. In early Mesopotamia, pictographic signs developed from systems used for record-keeping. Complex clay tokens eventually became pictographic signs made with a stylus, helping form the roots of later writing. The course material also explains that early pictographic signs could represent things and concepts, such as commodities, before more efficient wedge-shaped cuneiform marks became common.
