Through their findings Alvarez's team concluded that a huge meteorite or other fiery bolide had collided with Earth at such a high speed it vaporized on impact. As it fell it bored a tunnel through the atmosphere, creating a near-vacuum that sucked burning rock, minerals and gases from the impact crater out into space. This ejecta moved at the speed of sound, causing a huge sonic boom and sending shock waves around the globe. Within minutes vast areas of land would be on fire. Any plant life that survived the initial blast would eventually die as a cloud of ash surrounded Earth for months, blocking out the sun and impeding photosynthesis. With this important link in the food-chain destroyed, first herbivorous dinosaurs would starve to death, soon to be followed by the carnivores.
