The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
Michigan, where I grew up, is famous for the Great Lakes that surround it. In fact, Michigan is known as the Great Lakes state! While you might think of lakes as small bodies of water, the Great Lakes actually hold 20% of the fresh water on Earth. They can easily be seen from space. Since the lakes surround the entire state, they have been important trade routes for hundreds of years. Weather can be severe on the lakes, though, which means that over time, hundreds of ships have wrecked in the lakes. The most famous shipwreck of all is the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald.
