Text: PHLEBOTOMY ESSENTIALS by McCall & Tankersly, 3rd- 6th Edition.
Course Objectives:
1. To provide practical information and instruction in phlebotomy procedures and techniques;
2. To provide participants with the theories and principles of Venipuncture
3. To perform successful venipunctures and capillary collections.
4. To provide eligibility status to participants who wish to sit for AAPT national certification examination.
6. To provide knowledge of QA, QC, and Infectious Control
7. To provide Medical Terminology, an overview of Anatomy/Physiology
8. To provide an overview of the Circulatory and Cardiovascular System
9. The Lab Practicum will consist of students performing venipuncture on one another.
10.To provide students with the correct order of draw as it relates to CLSI.
11.To process blood sample via centrifuge and distribute to proper lab departments
Course Management:
Attendance: Students are expected to be present at all class sessions.
Students must maintain a 90% attendance rate to successfully complete the course.
Attendance is important since this is a laboratory-based course, which provides practical experiences that are necessary for student success. Therefore, you are responsible for missed work.
Books:
Electronic books are provided at no additional cost. However, students who prefer a hard copy are encouraged to purchase the book on Amazon.
Uniforms:
Students are required to wear navy blue scrubs during class. AAPT will provide the patch for a nominal fee of $5. The patch should be ironed on the right sleeve of the scrub top. Complete uniforms are available for purchase for $25 as well.
Payment:
Final payments must be made by the last week of class. If paying by money order, please make it payable to AAPT
Course Grading:
This is a certification course. Therefore, the national certification exam is the only exam that will be administered. Students must pass the exam with a minimum of 75% accuracy. Students are also expected to demonstrate proficiency in the venipuncture technique.
