Advanced Topics Survey 2023

You may answer as few or many questions as you'd like. I'm looking for ideas to improve for next year.

Name (optional):

  1. If an advanced reading group were started for seventh grade next year, which books would you require that you have felt were the most challenging AND interesting for both boys and girls? (This is from your AR reading only.)

  1. How do you feel about the following books?

            1 2 3 4 5       Didn't read
Red Badge of Courage Hated it Loved it
Rifles for Watie Hated it Loved it
Adventures of Tom Sawyer Hated it Loved it
Call of the Wild Hated it Loved it
A Christmas Carol Hated it Loved it
Animal Farm Hated it Loved it
Soldier's Heart Hated it Loved it
The Pearl Hated it Loved it

  1. Remember, I won't look at these results until after school is out & grades are submitted! How much messing around did your group do when working independently?

  1. What would be the best way to do differentiation (like when I let your group go in the hallway to do advanced work) and still keep students on task? Would you keep all students in the classroom? How would you still concentrate?

  1. What do you feel students cheated on the most on in this classroom (no names needed)? Or what do you think I should be aware of, esp. next year?

  1. If you feel cheating went on, what would be the best strategy(ies) you would use to end cheating?

  1. Do you have a suggestion of a way to make advanced work more productive or enjoyable? (Think about ways other teachers in the past have challenged you that were effective.)

  1. Now that you've been through my class, what would have been the best goals to set for the gifted or WEP plan (you can still suggest some even if you didn't participate in WEP)?

  1. Do you feel doing the tickets makes kids more irresponsible in this class? Or is this a good incentive? Do you have a better suggestion?

  1. Is there anything else you'd like to comment on about the class or doing advanced work or anything else I could do to be a more effective teacher?

  1. What was the most difficult part of the state test? Or what could I have taught better to prepare you more?

  1. Vocabulary instruction is not easy. If I assign a list to the entire class, most of you would have been bored. Vocabulary.com may not be ideal either, though. What suggestions do you have to improve using vocabulary.com or what would you do to improve vocabulary instruction for 7th grade students?

  1. Compared to the ways you've learned vocabulary in the past, how would you rate Vocabulary.com?

      1 2 3 4 5
    Hated it  Loved it

  1. AR is not easy to evaluate either. Independent reading is important for vocabulary growth & understand of text. I know that students do NOT like the requirements for BL; however, students need to be exposed to new vocabulary & new authors to grow. How would you change requirements so that students still grow but also enjoy books?

  1. I understand most students don't like the requirement for 70 pages a week. However, if no requirement was made, many students would mess around until the end of the nine weeks or feel even more inclined to cheat in order to attain goals. How would you change AR to help students still read an ample amount of time?

  1. Ideally, I would love to run a writing workshop where students would write about topics they enjoy the most. However, with state requirements, there are certain types of writing and skills I must teach. How have teachers in the past made writing more enjoyable yet also accomplish writing skills and goals?

  1. Years ago, I used to give 10 minutes of reading at the beginning of class to read. Do you like this better? Or, do you like getting worktime at the end of class with the ability to read at the end? Or at your age, is it better to get extended periods of time to read (20 minutes +) so that there is not so much starting and stopping?
