SLC Eval. 2009.1
OPINIONS WANTED: I am NOT hoping to win a popularity contest, but sometimes there are tough, blunt questions that need to be asked. No, I did not personally think of all of these questions. The questions (below), but were generated by MULTIPLE comments from MULTIPLE advisors from the first conference survey. The questions were developed from common concerns or common themes expressed by MORE THAN ONE ADVISOR. Data is often affected by personal opinion, which is almost impossible to quantify. It is a challenge to organize a local activity that will make 40 people happy, 100% of the time. It is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to organize a state activity that will make 4,000+ people happy, 100% of the time. (i.e., Some people are not truly happy unless they have something to complain about.) We = Advisor's and/or Members' Opinions
- We found location and/or time errors in the conference program.
- We noticed significant levels of disorganization in the CDEs.
- We noticed significant levels of disorganization in the Sessions.
- The walk between Vets and the Plex was UNREASONABLY long, and took too much time.
- Food options in the Sky-Walk were not effective options.
- Compared to past convention speakers, the keynote speaker was ABOVE average.
- The Delegate Session took too long.
- We understand that the Delegate Business Session is the ONLY REQUIRED function of the annual State FFA Conference.
- The Delegate meeting was not well organized.
- Members from my chapter WANT to be a state conference delegate.
- The Career Show seemed smaller?
- The Career Show seemed better than in past years?
- FFA Idol is a great concept, BECAUSE it is NOT a “talent” show.
(It is designed to capture the creativity of students to “entertain” members, rather than reward students that have performed well in other school-related talent competitions.)
- The waiting time in the Conference Registration Lines was far too long.
- The General Sessions need more excitement.
- Break up the "Stars Over Iowa" across multiple sessions.
- Break up the "Proficiency Awards" across multiple sessions.
- The General Sessions were far too long for a typical high school student to maintain their attention.
- FFA Band does provide an involvement-opportunity for some members, BUT DOES NOT provide enough value to offset the extra time needed in the sessions.
- FFA Chorus does provide an involvement-opportunity for some members, BUT DOES NOT provide enough value to offset the extra time needed in the sessions.
- Massing of the Flags does provide an involvement-opportunity for some members, BUT DOES NOT provide enough value to offset the extra time needed in the sessions.
- Compared to State Basketball or State Wrestling (at Vets), PARKING was more expensive.
- STATE CDE EXAMS should be conducted ON-LINE, the week before some State Ag Skills CDEs conducted at the State Conference
Membership dues and CDE participation fees have not been increased for a number of years. To delay eventual dues/fees increases, I think it would be acceptable to eliminate some printing costs by conducting the "individual-exam" portions of some Ag Skills CDEs ON-LINE, BEFORE the day of the state event. (example: FBM printing costs are approx. $5 per team)
- CDEs did NOT seem to run as smoothly as past years.
- Move DISTRICT BREAKOUT CONTENT to district conventions, to save time, increase attendance at the District Conventions, and carve more of a role for District Officers.
- Move the 3 minute State Officer installation to BEFORE the Iowa Degree Ceremony.
- We understand that Pre-Sessions are designed to provide entertainment while 3,000 to 4,000 attendees arrive and find their seats. This fun-time is NOT part of the sessions.
- CDEs start time was too early.
- CDEs start time was too late.
- CDE start times and/or locations were confusing.
- The Iowa Degree ceremony was too fast.
- Sponsor Recognition took too much time. (If needed, we would rather pay more in member dues to decrease time dedicated to Sponsor Recognition.)
- The State Officers and the Iowa FFA Foundation should ask FFA Sponsors “how” they would like to be recognized.
