Genetic Engineering Survey Period 2
Some students in Mrs. Palopoli's Period 2 Science class designed this survey on genetic engineering.

- Genetic Engineering is when scientists put the genes they want into an organism (during the embryo stage before it grows) so that the organism will have certain traits. For example, scientists added an extra memory gene to mice and when they were born, they were smarter than other mice. Do you think it is okay to put genes into non-human animals to make them smarter or stronger?
- We have figured out which genes cause specific diseases in humans. Do you think we should use genetic engineering to eliminate diseases in humans?
- We can use genetic engineering to change foods. For instance, scientists put a gene from a flounder fish (the gene that helps the fish live in the cold) and inserted it into tomato plants. Now these tomatoes won't die with frosts and have a longer growing time. Do you think it is okay to use genetic engineering to change foods like this?
- Scientists are learning more and more about genes. We even know which genes determine eye color and curly or straight hair. Do you think it is okay to genetically engineer humans for specific traits like eye color, intelligence, muscle strength, etc.
- Cloning is when you make an exact genetic duplicate of an organism. Think of the cloned army in Star Wars. Do you think it is okay to clone non-human animals?
