Animal Evaluation Day (a Concept)

One day, One location...Livestock, Dairy Cattle, and Horse CDE judging classes

Multiple live animal judging classes the same day and location to generate the respective CDE team placings and select winning teams advancing to the National FFA Horse CDE, Natl. FFA Dairy Cattle CDE, and Natl. FFA Livestock CDE.

Goal:

1) Increase participation to a level above the current average of 10% of the state's FFA chapters per state-level Ag Skills CDE.

2) Conduct components that are not required to be done in the presence of animal judging classes, before the Animal Evaluation Day.

3) Save time, save money, and increase access to FFA members.

  1. Animal Evaluation Day

Conduct all live judging classes (Horse, Dairy Cattle, and Livestock) on the same day at the same location. Other components of the respective team events will be completed BEFORE the Animal Pathways Evaluation Day.

    Goal:

    1) Schedule the day so that all FFA members could judge all species, if they so desire.

    2) Complete the evaluation of multiple CDE classes in the same amount of time as one CDE's live classes evaluation.

    3) Greatly reduce the time needed for all students to complete the oral reasons components, by using multiple video-cameras in multiple rooms.

    4) Reduce relevance of allegations like - "That member bought show animals from that oral reasons judge."

    5) Automate scoring of the knowledge exam.

  1. Video-taping Oral Reasons

NOT before, but at the Animal Eval. Day

Oral reasons classes would be taped in multiple rooms to speed-up the presentation time. The videos would be scored by a team of judges over the following couple of days. Final Placings would not be known for a few days, but top contending oral reasons presentations would be viewed by multiple judges rather than only one. An oral reasons rubric would be developed for scoring and shared with advisors before the event.

    Goals:
    1) Run multiple video-cameras to dramatically decrease the time needed for students to present oral reasons.
    2) Top scoring presentations would be reviewed by multiple judges.
    3) Top oral reasons presentations would be made available to all chapters.
