Instructions: Imagine that you have to wait a few hours for your medical appointment. While you wait, you hear a number of conversations in the waiting room. Mark one of the three options following each set of sentences/contexts to indicate what you would say in each situation.

  1. First, a couple and their baby enter the waiting room. The man hears the cries of the baby and he asks his wife:*
    A. “What does the baby want now?”
    B. “What is the baby wanting now?”

  1. The woman, a bit irritated, looks at him and responds:*
    A. “Nothing. The baby is waking up from a deep sleep.”
    B. “Nothing. The baby wakes up from a deep sleep.”

  1. A bit alarmed by the babies screams, the man asks his wife what her sister does to calm down their baby, Liliana, when she cries. His wife tells him:*
    A. “Among other things, she plays the guitar.”

  1. The man responds that the best thing would have been not to allow the baby to take a nap right before the doctor’s appointment. Once again, his wife looks at him strangely and explains:*

  1. A nurse arrives at the waiting room and asks you to fill out some forms given you are a new patient and it is your first visit. When you finish with the paperwork you return it to the nurse and you ask her how much more time the wait will be until you see the doctor. She tells you: *
    A. “I am not sure, but certainly the secretary knows how long it will be. I will ask her now.”
    B. “I am not sure, but certainly the secretary is knowing how long it will be. I will ask her now.”
    C. Both.


  1. Meanwhile a woman with three children enters the waiting room. It is evident that the woman is nervous. The woman asks one of her daughters to go check on her brother. Her daughter returns and tells her:*
    A. “Mom, John is so hungry that he is eating a few crackers to hold off until lunch time.”
    B. “Mom, John is so hungry that he eats a few crackers to hold off until lunch time.”
    C. Both.


  1. The women smiles and thanks her daughter. Then she asks her to go check on her daughter. The older daughter goes to check on her younger sister and she returns to her mom and says: *
    A. “Right now she plays with her dolls.”
    B. “Right now she is playing with her dolls.”

  1. A gentleman dressed as a doctor enters the waiting room. He says hello to the nurse and secretary and disappears behind an office door. The secretary looks at the nurse and asks: *
    A. “Is Doctor Ramirez okay? Every day he is coming to work late.”
    B. “Is Doctor Ramirez okay? Every day he comes to work late.”
    C. Both.


  1. The nurse nods and says to the secretary: *
    A. “I know. I think it is because they build new offices by the center and traffic is bad.”

  1. The nurse approaches you and tells you that Doctor Ramirez is ready to see you. You enter into his office. Doctor Ramirez introduces himself and tells you that before anything else he has a few basic questions to ask you. First, he asks about your eating habits. In particular, about the amount of fruit you generally eat. You tell him: *
