Accreditation Teacher Survey

This survey is being used to clarify some issues which have been discussed during accreditation meetings. They do not necessarily mean that a particular idea is being considered for implementation or change. Remember that implementation of any suggestion could take as long as five years.

Name

  1. Achievement - One approach to engage at-risk students better is by teaming teachers of two different subjects, like science and math or social studies and English. They could have up to 150 students (6 sections) in common. The two teachers would collaborate to reinforce each other's standards, vocabulary, units and eventually, maybe even develop units or activities together. Which of the following statements expresses your feelings about participating in something like this?
I really don't understand how it would work
I would like to do this.
I would be interested in being part of a "pilot" program.
I have no desire to do this.

  1. Teacher teaming can include more teachers as well. One group of 150 students could share a "team" of core teachers who collaborate together to align their curriculums. They also get a chance to "connect" as a team with a smaller group of students as mentors or just an informal support group. Which of the following statements expresses your feelings about participating in something like this?
I really don't understand how it would work
I would like to do this.
I would be interested in being part of a "pilot" program.
I have no desire to do this.

  1. Later start times are thought to support better learning in teenagers. Would you support the idea of a later start time? This means that school would also get out at a later time.
    Yes
    No
    I'm not sure

  1. Some schools have created team-taught, project-based "small learning communities" to address the needs of at-risk students. These students might be taught a different curriculum than other students and they might have a very different school schedule. They might even do some of their work at home or online. Which of the following statements expresses your feelings about this?
I think those students should be encouraged to go to Pioneer HS or Silver State Charter High School.
I would not want to be a part of that program.
I might be interested in being a part of such a program.
I think this is a good idea, but I would not want to be a part of it

  1. We currently have 62 students who are failing at least 4 classes, many of whom have percentages so low there is no mathematical possibility of them earning credit in those classes. Which of the following should we do in situations like this? You can select more than one answer.
Offer A+ recovery every period as an option for them. A+ is the online credit recovery program we have purchased, currently only offered after school.
Have multiple study halls to put them in so more motivated students can be taught
Create an alternative in-house program of some kind to put them in
Call parents, keep them in their classes and let them choose to fail at that point
Call parents, refer them to the deans if they become a discipline problem
Create an after school or before school program for them
Other - please write your answer in the free response box at the end of the survey

  1. Which of the following would best address the needs of freshman at Carson High School? You may select multiple answers.
They need a required course to teach them transitional skills
They need teams of teachers in a "house" to "bond" with them and collaborate on units for them
Each freshman should hold a freshman conference with their parents during the first semester at the school where the student leads the conference. Every parent will be expected to show up and be introduced to the school by his/ her child.
They need intensive remediation to get them up to grade level
They need intensive career exploration opportunities to make things more relevant
Teachers of freshmen need to have agreed upon standards for grades, homework, and behavior.
We need to start freshmen a day or two earlier than other students.
Freshmen and their parents need to have multiple orientation opportunities to get training for success.
They need multiple electives to engage them
They need broad career exploration classes to direct them
We need to identify the at-risk students and find mentors for them
We need to use Link Crew more to help them transition

  1. Do you need more training on using and understanding Common Core Standards effectively?

  1. Do you know how to use and do you choose to use the reading, science and math scores (MAP scores) to help the students in your class?
Yes, I know how to use them, and I do choose to use them
Yes, I know how to use them, but I don't really do so
Yes, I know how to use MAP scores but I only use the scores that directly affect my subject area
No, I don't really know how to use them effectively
No, I did not know that they were available to us

  1. How would you rate your ability to support poor readers and writers in your classes? You may select more than one answer.
I'm not very good at either
I can somewhat help poor readers
I can somewhat help poor writers
I am above average in both areas

  1. If you could give a reason why some of the changes we are considering through accreditation might worry you, what would it be?
We are doing a good enough job as it is; why mess it up?
We already have too much to do; where will we find the time to make changes?
I'm very comfortable doing what I am doing now.
I'm worried it will make my job worse, not better.
I don't want to learn a whole bunch of new things to do on top of my normal job.
I'm concerned we aren't addressing the actual problems at CHS
I'm actually pretty excited to make some meaningful changes
    I'm not worried

  1. It has been suggested that we try to increase our CTE courses and organize them (to some degree) into Career Academies (School Within a School). Teams of core teachers would work with the CTE teachers within a certain academy on curriculum, projects and activities. Academies can be things like Culinary Arts, Law and the Justice System, Green Technology, etc. Which of the following statements expresses your feelings about participating in something like this?
I don't really understand how this would work
I would like to do this.
I would be interested in being part of a "pilot" program.
I have no desire to do this.

  1. Members of business and industry and of the community would like to partner with teachers to make career-related units and applied activites. They would like to work with teams of teachers as guest speakers, mentors, curriculum designers or to facilitate work experiences. Which of the following statements expresses your feelings about participating in something like this?
I don't really understand how it would work.
I would like to do this.
I would be interested in being part of a "pilot" program.
I have no desire to do this.

  1. One of the concerns with our current school and schedule is the lack of time for teachers to collaborate. Implementing team teaching, interdisciplinary projects, or Career Academies will require a large amount of collaboration time. One way to structure this needed time is by scheduling in monitored collaboration time for teachers who choose to participate in those programs. Teachers who did not have the monitored collaboration time could choose to have reduced student contacts or reduced course preps (not as many different courses to prepare for). Would that seem equitable to you?
I don't really understand how it would work
    No
    Yes

  1. We have many ideas concerning ways to improve test scores, reduce failure rates, and reduce dropout rates. We also have many ideas concerning ways to improve college and career readiness as well as communication. What are your feelings about our current 6-period A/B schedule concerning these ideas or implementations? This information may be used to guide the Action Plans a few years down the road, if necessary.
It probably does not allow enough flexibility to accomplish many of our goals.
It would probably work just fine to meet most of the goals.
The 7-period schedule is probably a better way to accomplish the goals, if teaching assignments can be made equitable.
A 4-period/ day schedule (8 periods total) would probably accomplish the goals better

  1. If we ended up having flexible schedules where some students and teachers could choose to start school at 9:30 for A3/ B4 but would stay for a 7th period until 3:30, would you be interested in teaching the late schedule? Please see the image provided.

    Yes
    No

  1. If some teachers taught a period of Study Hall, Freshman Seminar, or Career Exploration/ Work Readiness, and other teachers taught an additional period of their regular courses, would that seem equitable to you? Each teacher would still end up with basically the same number of student contacts.
    Yes
    No

  1. How often do you have your students do sustained reading (20 minutes) with higher level questions in your classes?
    Daily
    Approximately once a week
    Approximately once a month
    Once or twice a semester
I probably don't ever do sustained reading

  1. How often do you have your students write formal assignments of a paragraph or more (a paragraph being 7 sentences minimum) and you give feedback based upon writing structure as well as content? Please check all that apply.

I have fewer than five students fail every semester; it isn't really an issue
    Poor attendance
Not getting makeup work and notes when absent
Not doing or turning in homework
Not doing homework so they fail the tests and quizzes

Not taking good notes, so they can't study
Not taking good notes, so they can't do homework
    Not paying attention in class

  1. Approximately how many times do you "engage" your students in your curriculum? Use this definition of "engagement": having students actively think about the subject and how it might impact them, their future, or their world. Having them do group discussions, problem-solving acitivites, categorizing concepts, answering thought-provoking problems, make products, or any of those many other engaging activities.
    Every day
    At least once a week
    At least once a month
    At least once a semester

  1. How often do you do activities or have conversations with your students that are intended to link your curriculum to job skills or a career area? For instance, you give them a specific math problem with a specific work scenario or they write a memo to "employees" about a work-related issue.
    Every day
    At least once a week
    At least once a month
    At least once a semester
    Not at all

    No

  1. Would it be helpful to have a literacy specialist work with your department to help integrate reading comprehension and writing into your subject matter?
    Yes
    No

  1. If Carson High hired a literacy specialist, what would you like to see that person do for your department?

  1. Which of the following might help us increase the rigor of all our courses?
Restructuring our classes into differentiated levels based upon the Zone of Proximal Development as a guide.
Offering more tutoring classes to get all students up to higher skill levels
Creating a special program to remediate incoming Freshman until they meet a minimum level of proficiency in reading, writing, math, and science.

  1. Which of the following would you be willing to teach during that 45-minute extra period next year or possibly the year after? Some of these may not be available this year, so be thinking of possiblities for the next year as well.
General study hall for students who want time to do work at school with teacher support (must be monitored carefully)
AP or Honors study hall to support Honors and AP students
A career exploration course within a certain pathway (an introduction to various jobs in the Manufacturing Pathway for example)
A career preparation course covering resumes, interviewing, job searches (probably working with a representative from Nevadaworks or Jobconnect)
A career exploration course that would cover multiple pathways.
Freshman Seminar - a course to introduce freshman to successful behaviors in school with a little bit of study hall in the mix and a little career exploration in the mix perhaps
    Intramural activities or Advanced Sports
Sophomore Seminar for previous MASH students - we could call it SMASH (Sophomore Manditory Academic Study Hall)
A six-week rotating unit with two other teachers. You would put together a six-week unit about your favorite subject and so would two other teachers. The students would rotate every six-weeks until you had seen all 3 sections of students. For example, a Music Appreciation Course, the History of Orienteering, and Zumba. Students would be signing up for all three courses.

  1. If we can get enough students to sign up for WNC courses, what WNC courses would you like to see offered within the scope of your department? Remember, it cannot be anything that is already offered at our campus.

  1. One of the areas of research discussed is using Project-Based Learning for more authentic, student-centered experiences. This is much more complicated than simply having students do projects. There is a pretty specific format for PBL. We saw it in action during the High Tech High videos we watched in January. Would you be interested in getting training on PBL?
I don't really understand what it is
    Yes
    No

  1. Free Response: Please write any information that would help clarify a previous answer.

  1. Is there any area of professional development or training you would like to see offered that may not have been suggested already?
