  1. Basic Computer Use:

    I do not use a computer.
    I start the computer, open, use and close programs on my own.
    I open programs from icons and the Start bar and use more than one program at the same time.
    I teach myself how to use new programs and discover additional program features on my own.


  1. Computer Terminology:*
    I don’t know the names of the parts of a computer.
    I can identify the monitor, keyboard, mouse and CPU.
    I know the drive letters for the hard drive, floppy drive and CD-ROM drive.
    I can put a computer system together by plugging in the mouse, keyboard, monitor, phone cable and printer cable.


  1. Keyboarding:*
    I don’t know how to type.
    I use two fingers to type (hunt and peck method)
    I can type with all my fingers on the keyboard and looking at the keys.
    I can type with all my fingers on the keyboard, without looking at the keys.


  1. Windows Desktop:*
    I don’t know what the desktop is or where to find it.
    I use the desktop icons to start applications.
    I know how to add a new folder to the desktop.
    I know how to open and resize multiple windows on the desktop.


  1. Windows Terminology:*
    I don’t know how to open, save a document or close out of a Windows application.
    I know the difference between the TitleBar and the TaskBar.
    I know how to minimize a window and then retrieve it from the TaskBar.
    I use keystrokes to do most of the actions in Windows like copying, cutting, pasting, and closing windows.


  1. File Management:*
    I do not save any of the documents that I create using the computer.
    I select, open and save documents on different drives.
    I use Windows Explorer or My Computer to locate drives and files.
    I create folders to organize my files and maintain my documents on the computer.


  1. E-mail:*
    I do not use e-mail.
    I compose and send appropriate e-mail messages outside of school.
    I organize my mail folders to save messages and delete those I no longer need.
    I use e-mail to request or send information for research or school projects.


  1. Word Processing:*
    I do not use a word processing.
    I use word processing for basic writing tasks.
    I use word processor tools (copy, cut, and paste text, change font style, spell check, grammar check) to edit my work.
    I revise and improve the content of my previous drafts and publish a quality document.


  1. Graphics (and Photos):*
    I do not use graphics (or photos) with my word processing pieces.
    I create pictures with painting and drawing programs and use clip art.
    I select and insert graphics (or photos) in order to make a point or illustrate what I have learned.
    I edit clip art, scan graphics (or photos) and modify them using a graphic editor (Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Photo Deluxe).


  1. Desktop Publishing:*
    I do not use a publishing program.
    I use templates or wizards to create a published document.
    I create original publications from a blank page combining design elements such as columns, clip art, tables, word art and captions.
    I design original publications that communicate to others what I’ve learned.


  1. Spreadsheets, Charts & Graphs:*
    I do not use spreadsheets.
    I can enter data in a spreadsheet and create charts or graphs.
    I can choose a chart which best reflects my data, and apply title and labels.
    I can explain the meaning of my spreadsheet and data charts to others.


  1. Research / Information-Searching:*
    I do not use electronic sources to find information.
    I can locate information in electronic sources (World Book, Internet, CDs).
    I select, gather and use information from multiple electronic sources to answer a question.
    I analyze, evaluate and communicate the information I’ve gathered, and credit the sources I've used.


  1. Search Strategies:*
    I do not use the Internet for research.
    I use only my favorite search engine; Google, Dogpile, Yahoo
    I use multiple search engines to locate information on my research question.
    I know how to use keywords and Boolean logic in my search strategies.


  1. Multimedia Presentations - PowerPoint, Inspiration, Web Pages, Sound & Video:*
    I do not use technology for presentations.
    I use templates and Wizards in the programs to create presentations.
    I create original presentations from a blank page combining elements such as clip art, tables, word art and captions.
    I combine text, pictures, video and sound imported from different sources, to create original presentations.


  1. Creating Media:*
    I don’t create my own media such as burning a CD-ROM music disk.
    I know how to burn a CD-ROM.
    I know how to edit sounds or music and burn it onto a CD-ROM.
