God loves Cheerleaders

Cheerleaders in an East Texas school district made banners using Bible verses. They wanted God to help their football team.

An organization (Freedom from Religion) complained that the banners violate the First Amendment "establishment clause" that the government, or a public government school, cannot establish nor endorse a religion.

  1. This case went to court. What do you think the judge should decide? (Choose one)

Stop the Banners: The First Amendment is clear. Government cannot promote religion and since the Cheerleaders are representatives of a public government funded school it's illegal for them to use religion during school events or on school property.
Continue the Banners: The Cheerleaders have a right to free speech because they are doing this as individuals and not as paid officials of the school.
