The Lone Tree by Caspar David Friedrich: this painting depicts a shepherd and his flock beneath an ancient tree;
the tree is meant to represent the eternality of nature compared to the temporary lives of mankind. However, nature is
shown to struggle at some points, shown by the lack of leaves at the top. In addition, a cross can be seen at the top of the tree, and a church in the background; both further compare man and nature.
