APEnglish Beginning of Year Survey
- It was someone's idea other than mine (my parents, Mrs. Pettit, a counselor) to take this class.*
- On a scale of 1-5, one=I hated it, 2=I left it until too late so was overwhelmed, 3=it was ok, 4=it was fun, 5=I loved it, tell me how you felt about the summer homework.*
- What book did you read this summer, and tell me what you thought about it. You have 5 lines, so be brief.*
- Check what concerns you the most in terms of your student skills.*
- My experience reading non-fiction essays (like opinion pieces in a newspaper or a magazine) or books is: (answer as many as are true)*
- I'm most concerned about (check your top two) regarding this class:*
- The thing I'm best at in English class is: (check two or fewer)*
- From a scale of 1=hate, 2=dislike but I can do it ok, 3=dislike but I'm pretty good at it, 4=like but would like to learn more, 5=this is one of my talents, how do you feel about giving speeches and other public speaking requirements?*
- I hate being called on by the teacher. (If you check this, you must promise that you will raise your hand regularly - like every day or two - so that I don't have to call on you. Class participation is essential in this class - discussion is the main tool for learning that we will use - so you have to participate. Because I care about your best, I have to call on you if you don't indicate to me you want to be called upon.)*
- What do you hope to get out of AP English? (You have 5 lines)*
- Would you prefer to have a seating chart, yes or no? (Note: I'm happy for you to sit near your friends as I know you have the self-control necessary to stay on task, but sometimes if you have an uneven number of friends in a class, sitting at a table of 4 can be awkward. I often find seating charts minimize drama, but tell me what you think.)*
