Periodic Properties Vocabulary

  1. What are valance electrons?
The most valued electrons in an atom.
Electrons which occupy the outer most energy level.
Electrons which make up the noble gas configuration.
Electrons in the first energy level of an atom.

  1. What is the atomic radius.
Half the diameter of an atom.
Distance from the nucleus to the outer most electrons.
One-half of the distance from center to center of two like atoms.
Can't be determined because the edges of atoms are fuzzy.

  1. What happens to the size of atoms (the radius) as you move from element to element across a row on the periodic table?
Each element is about the same size as you move across the row.
Each element's radius gets larger and larger as you move across the row.
Each element's radius gets smaller and smaller as you move across the row.

  1. What is ionization energy?
The amount of energy needed to add electrons to an atom.
The amount of energy needed to remove electrons from an atom.
The amount of energy an atom needs to steal electrons from another atom.
The amount of energy an atom needs to chemically bond with another atom.

  1. What is electronegativity?
It is a measure of an atom's ability to lose electrons.
It is a measure of an atom's ability to attract electrons towards itself.
It is a measure of an atom's ability to hold onto its own electrons.
It is a measure of an atom's electric field.

  1. Which property is almost the same as electronegativity?
    Shielding effect
    atomic radius
    ionization energy
    electron affinity

  1. What happens to atomic radius as you move down a group on the periodic table.
The radius is about the same as you move down a group (column)
The radius gets larger and larger as you move down the column.
The radius gets smaller and smaller as you move down the column.
