Articles of Confederation and Constitution

The year is 1787 and you are a representative for a state in the newly independent United States of America. You will need to decide what you would like to see in a new government. Keep in mind the information you know about your state.

  1. Do you want to keep the Articles of Confederation? Why or Why not? Do you want to revise or throw them out entirely and start again? Why?


  1. Do you want a strong central government? Why? What powers should the central government have?


  1. Do you want a leader? If so, what kind of leader ? (describe his qualities). What do we call the leader? What if the leader gets too powerful? What powers should the leader have?


  1. Who should make laws? The leader or a separate group? Should there be a Congress- a group of representatives from each state?


  1. How will that number or representatives be determined? Should states with greater population get more representatives or should each state get the same number regardless of size?


  1. If you decided to have a Congress based on the population of states should women and children count as population even if though they probably won't be given the right to vote? What about slaves?


  1. Who would have the right to vote? Everyone? Even people who cannot read or write and may know nothing about politics? What if they vote for an evil leader?
