It is customary that one of the first things done during Day 1 of training is for the trainer to make an introduction to the class. Using a scale of 1 to 7, where 1 is least important and 7 is most important please rate each of the following statements made by a trainer during their introductory speech. In the classroom, trainees may be older, younger, the same or similar age, the same race, ethnicity, and/or gender of the trainer, or any combination of these. The relationships that trainers establish between they and their trainees may often become as treacherous as they may become enjoyable or seemingly good. Which of the following actions do you think is best action for a trainer to take?
*
Join their tribe – become part of the group
Start a rival tribe – compete with their tribal leader for majority attention
Suppress their tribe – take ownership and dominate the environment; after all, you are the boss and chief.
Stand apart from their tribe – become the solitary outsider, a group unto yourself
Encourage them to join your tribe – establish yourself as the sole leader and authority and earn their respect.
For some trainers, classroom control can become a big issue. When trainers lose control training often stops. When dealing with a disruptive and argumentative trainee, which of the following should not be done?
*
At all times, avoid becoming confrontational. Be calm, patient, and in control.
Argue your point in the group environment to gain support of others in the class. If the student refuses to accept your explanations and proceeds in an argumentative manner, advise the student that there will be consequences should they proceed, which may include a write-up or termination.
Attempt to disaggregate the issues to find causation for their behavior, and then address in an appropriate manner.
Be confident. Back the student into a corner, show authority, and stand your ground.
Never leave the situation unattended, unaddressed, or unresolved.
Avoid arguing in the group environment. If the student refuses to accept your explanations and proceeds in an argumentative manner, advise the student that you will be happy to discuss the matter in further detail later.
