Choose ONE of the following adaptations of Romeo and Juliet for the class to watch. Following each choice is a description of the movie.
Romeo and Juliet (1968): setting and clothing represent the time period Shakespeare intended. Sticks very closely to the actual play. Won two Academy Awards.
Romeo + Juliet (1996): while the lines are Shakespearean, the setting and clothing are modern, which can be a little confusing. Deviates from the play, especially towards the end. Nominated for one Academy Award.
West Side Story (1961): musical adaptation set in New York in the 1960s. Instead of a rivalry between families, it's between gangs. Does not use Shakespeare's lines, although a few are adapted. Won 10 Academy Awards.
Gnomeo and Juliet (2011): animated adaptation. Rivalry is between lawn ornaments in two adjoining backyards.
