EARLY SETTLEMENT - Jamestown

After a failed attempt to set up Sir Walter Raleigh's colony at Roakoke, King James I authorized another attempt to build an English empire in North America. The first permanent settlement at Jamestown in 1607 started a pattern of settlement that will extend along the whole Atlantic coastline.
