                                      Summer Reading Log

Dear Parents and Students,

To encourage the students at St. Pius X High School to become life long readers, the English department has come up with the notion of summer reading.   The idea behind summer reading is for students to find time away from television and video games to sit down with a book they enjoy.  This is not intended to be something where a student is forced to read a ‘classic’ they otherwise would not read on their own.

The only requirement I have is that the students read from a print source (not electronic).  If a student has trouble finding a book they might enjoy, I have a list of suggested reading on my web site.  Students DO NOT have to choose one of the books from my list, it is only a tool to help them find a work they might enjoy.

Students will log this reading on MOODLE, on online tracking tool which can be found on the school website.  Directions on how to use MOODLE can be found below.

If a student fails to turn in a completed summer reading log they will receive a zero.  At the beginning of the year this will be a large part of their grade; however, as the semester progresses, it will ultimately shrink to probably about 6-7%.

I do not wish to have students come up to me after the summer asking. “Can I make it up?”  My response will be, “I don’t know how you will be able to do so.” Can you go back in time and recall your reading from two months ago?

Myself and the rest of the English Department want to put a structure in place and keep it there so that students may be assured it is always there for them, and they know we mean what we say. Just like when you ground them for a week, they know you truly mean a week. This is our job as parents and teachers.  Thus I know that you will help support me in this effort to encourage them to develop their reading and honestly do what is expected of them.
