Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year!

I am looking forward to meeting my students and their parents. Please e-mail me at kanzalone@saintviator.com with any questions about the summer reading assignments.

American Literature and Composition Honors students are expected to complete the summer reading assignment.  The summer reading assignment can be found on the Saint Viator web page.  All summer reading assignments are due on the first day of class.  All assignments must be completed following the specific directions accompanying the assignment.  Students must bring physical copies of all typed work in 12 point Times New Roman font and double-spaced.  Do not e-mail Mrs. Anzalone your assignment.  Do not bring it on a flash drive.  You must have a physical copy of all assignments with you on the first day of class.

- Students will meet in the Wireless Lab 218 to work on revising their summer essays.  Students will complete a peer review. 
- Homework:  None is due tomorrow.  However, the revised summer essay is due on Monday, September 17.  The copy needs to be turned into www.turnitin.com.  Students also should bring a final draft printed out.  They will need to turn in the original draft Mrs. Anzalone edited, the peer review completed in class on Thursday, and the final draft.

- Students will view three clips from the film Into the Wild and discuss Alex's transcendentalist philosophies.
- Homework:  The revised summer essay is due on Monday, September 17.  The copy needs to be turned into www.turnitin.com.  Students also should bring a final draft printed out.  They will need to turn in the original draft Mrs. Anzalone edited, the peer review completed in class on Thursday, and the final draft.

- Students will view three commercials which categorize ethos, pathos, and logos in some fashion.  We will discuss the persuasive devices in each commercial.
- Students will work in groups analyzing advertisements.

- We will begin a discussion and take notes on Anne Bradstreet, a Puritan female author.
- Homework:  Read the two poems "Upon the Burning of Our House" and "To my dear and loving husband" by Anne Bradstreet.  Complete the reading guide which accompanies the poems.

- Mrs. Anzalone will introduce The Scarlet Letter.  Yay!  Please give this book a chance.  It is worth reading, and having a broad knowledge of the book will assist students on the AP Literature exam their senior year.
- Homework:  Read The Scarlet Letter chapters 1-3 and complete the reading guide for chapters 1-3.  Students must annotate chapter 2.  This is individual work and should not be done with friends.  Students will take a reading quiz Tuesday reviewing chapters 1-3.

- Homework:  The Great Gatsby test is Wednesday.  This is a pre-AP multiple choice exam.  There is no formal study guide as the AP courses do not provide study guides for exams.  Therefore, we are practicing our ability to take a test without a formal guide as we prepare for it.  Hint: I might suggest reviewing any reading guides we completed during the study of the novel.  I also might suggest reading chapters that you may have browsed through.  The exam requires that you have read the entire book.
