Differentiating between familiar and formal forms of address,
remember the following:
1) Familiar forms of address and the use of "du" is reserved for familiy members and close friends.
2) The polite form of address and the use of "Sie" is for everyone else.
3) It's better to use the polite form until your counterpart tells you it's fine to use the familiar.
