What were the causes for New Imperialism?The industrial revolution made European countries seek economic gain and desires to sustain their new found riches.
What was "New Imperialism"?One country dominates another country politically. economically, and culturally.
What types of reasons did controlling countries give for their imperialism?European nations came out of the IR with power and money. They hoped for new markets to sell to and wanted easy access to natural resources.
Why was western Imperialism so successful?Europeans had strong economies, powerful militaries, improved medical technologies, well organized governments.
What were their military reasons for imperialism?They needed harbors/ports to resupply their ships of coal. They also wanted easy access to manufacturing resources:, maganese, palm oil, etc. for manufacturing.
What role did "nationalism play in Western imperialism?Rival nations seized neighboring countries to halt other countries from grabbing all the land.
What were western "humanitarian goals"?Missionaries, doctors, and colonial officials felt they had the duty to "spread"medicine, law, and the Christian religion.
How did Social Darwinism fit into imperialism?Many westerners applied Darwins ideas about natural selection...Europeans races=superior to all others. Conquest was nature's way of improving the human species.

Why was Western Imperialism successful?A few reasons:The Ottoman Empire and the Qin Dynasties were in decline, wars in Africa (slave trade), and newer African Empires were too weak to withstand them.
Forms of Imperial rule:colonies, protectorates, sphers of imfluence (french and Britain)

French form:direct rule: officials and soldiers to do the work.
What did the French want?They wanted to turn the colonies into French
Brittish form:The indirect rule: use of sultans, chiefs, or other local rulers.
What did the British want?They wanted to educate the sons of existing rulers to learn the "British way"
What were protectorates?Local rulers were left, but expected to "follow" to advice of the European rulers.
Advantages of protectoratesA protectorate did not require a large military committment to run it (==LESS Expensive!!)
Who claimed the Americas?The USA wanted its "sphere of influence" gained economic power.
