Clip Art | Prepared graphic images that can be copied onto a document or a graphic. |
Paint Program | A software program that allows the user to control pixels on the computer screen to produce graphics or clip art. |
Plotter | A device designed to output graphics usually on a large piece of paper. |
CAD (Computer aided design) | Software that assists in producing technical drawings so they appear as 3D. Usually used by engineers, architects, and animators. |
GUI (Graphical user interface) | A way of interacting with a computer that uses a mouse and icons to initiate actions. |
PDF | Portable Document Format, used to create files read by a browser plug-in called Acrobat Reader. To share documents across computer platforms such as Windows, Macintosh, Linux, and Unix machines. |
EM, EN Space | The space equal to the letter M. Or the space equal to the letter N. |
Guide | Guides are non-printing rules that provide guidelines to the layout of a document. |
Header | Text that prints in the top margin of the page. |
Masthead | The list of editors, contributors, and business information required inside a magazine. |
Points | A basic unito measuring type. 72 points equal an inch |
Principles of Design | Balance, harmony, contrast, dominant element, white space, consistency, repetiton, alignment, and proximity in a document. |
Orphans | First line of a paragraph that falls at the bottom of the previous column. |
Proofs | A representation matching the appearance of the printed piece. |
San Serif | Type without a stroke at the end of the letter form. |
Serif | Type with strokes at the end of the letter form based upon Roman style lettering. |
Dashes | N dashes used between two numbers indicating a range 1 - 2. M dashes are used grammatically to show a pause. See EM and EN spaces. |
Grayscale | An image consisting only of gray tones, such as a black and white photograph. |
CSS | Cascading Style lsheets,used to format text. |
Runaround (Text Wrap) | Text that wraps itself (flows) around an object. |
Type, Typeface, Type family | Type or character. A group of related typefaces such as Times, Times bold, Times italic, are a type family and comprise a typeface. |
