| pioneer species | The first species that move into an area after a disturbance, such as lichen (algae, fungi) and mosses. |
| climax community | The stage of an ecosystem in which it does not change much. |
| ecological | The natural process following a disturbance in which one community of plants and animals gradually replaces another. |
| primary succession | Ecological succession that begins in an area where both the living things and the soil have been destroyed. |
| secondary | Ecological succession that follows a disturbance that has wiped out most living things in an area but has not destroyed, covered, or removed the soil. |
