V7 Word Basic Terms

These words cover Formatting, Alignment, Tables, and Graphics in Word 2010.

Word ProcessingCommon application type (such as Microsoft Word 2010) that allows a user to type letters, reports, and other professional looking documents.
Show/Hide featureThe name of the MS Word 2010 feature that offers an optional display showing symbols indicating a tab, space or use of the Enter key.
Status barThe bar near the bottom of the MS Word application that contains the zoom slider and shows the progress of current tasks and allows control of the document viewing.
Zoom SliderThe item on the status bar that enables the user to increase or decrease the size of content in the Word 2010 window.
Enter KeyThe key(s) used to begin a new paragraph in MS Word 2010.
CTRL + EndThe key(s) used to move quickly to the bottom of a document.
Mini ToolbarThe following automatically appears based on tasks you perform, and contains commands related to changing the appearance of text in a document.
Dialog Box LauncherLocated in the lower-right corner of the ribbon groups, this small arrow when clicked displays a dialog box or a task pane with additional options for the group.
RibbonThe control center located below the title bar at the top of the Word 2010 window .
ScrollThe bar that is used to navigate and display the various areas of a document.
SplitThe command that is used to split a document into two panes so that different parts of the document can be viewed at the same time.
Document windowThe area used to view portions of a document on the screen.
WatermarkA graphic that appears behind text.
BordersThe lines drawn to visually frame documents, tables or cells in a Microsoft Word 2010 document .
Page LayoutThe ribbon is used to effect the page background of a document and also allows a user to change a document theme in order to convey a different look and feel.
ScalingResizing a graphical image.
SmartArtThe feature allows you to create graphical lists and process diagrams easily and quickly.
Home RibbonContains commands to adjust paragraph and line spacing in a document.
AlignmentThe way in which a paragraph lines up horizontally between the paper edges of a document (Justified Alignment = text aligned with both the left and right margins)
Header/FooterItems can be added at the very bottom of a page (footer) or the very top of the page (Header) in a document.
TableThe Microsoft Word 2010 feature allows users to have lists of information in horizontal rows and vertical columns. (Select the part of a table by using the mouse pointer and clicking the table border!!!)
Table HandleUsed to select the entire table (click and move the handle to select the entire table).
Tab KeyCan be used just like the arrow keys and mouse pointer to move around in a table.
SortingArranging the information in a table (alphabetical is an option).
Table ColumnThe vertical portions of a table (change the width of a table column by dragging its border to adjust).
Table RowThe horizontal portion of a table (row height can be changed by dragging the row border to adjust the width).
Insert RibbonThe ribbon used to add headers, footers, and contains the text group needed for application of desktop publishing features in Word 2010.
WordArtThe feature that is used for applying visually dramatic formatting to text and creating text that is considered a graphical object. (Note: The Insert Ribbon contains the WordArt objects)
HelpMicrosoft menus accessed by clicking F1 or the help button located in the upper right corner of the application window.
TabThe thing you click to switch from one ribbon to another in Word 2010 (it contains the name of the ribbons).
