/j/ spelled -ge and -dge

Decide which spelling pattern to use.
Use -dge to create a short vowel sound in the proceeding vowel.
Use -ge to create a long vowel sound in the proceeding vowel.
If there is a consonant sound before the /j/ use -ge. The consonant +ge will create a short vowel sound.
