| Theme | the verbal and visual idea that ties the yearbook together |
| Sidebar | extra coverage on a spread, usually fun stuff like Q & A, polls, charts, quick quotes, etc. |
| Folio | the part of the spread that contains the page number, section, topic, and any accompanying graphics |
| Gutter | the space in a double-page spread where the pages are folded and things can get lost |
| Bleed | when words or graphics run off the edge of the pages |
| Caption | a few sentences that identify the who, what, where, when, why and how of a picture |
| Headline | the line of large type used to tell the reader what is to follow on the spread. It does not "label" the page. |
| Subheadline | the secondary title for the page that provides more information or serves as the page's label |
| Dominant photo | the largest and most prominent image on the page that sets the tone and tells the best story for the spread's topic |
| Kicker | a word or phrase that describes each picture before the caption begins. Often, it serves as a mini-headline for each picture. |
| Deadline | when the pages are due to the plant in order for them to print the book in time |
| 3 peat | repeating elements at least 3 times for emphasis and theme development |
| Section dividers | a kind of "title page" for a single section of the book |
| Double page spread | two facing pages on the same topic |
| Signature | Every 16 pages of the book. It's how the pages are actually printed (before they are folded, sewn and cut). |
| Index | a list of names and organizations and what pages to find them on |
| Copy | main story or dominant text on a yearbook spread |
| Title page | the first page of the book, where all the contact and theme information goes |
| Pulled color | When supplemental color in graphics and/or texts mirrors what is found in the primary images on the spread |
| Edit | to make corrections and changes to a page |
| Interview | a conversation between a reporter and a source |
| Package | a grouping of pictures and copy that are on the same topic and relate to the page. Often functions as a sidebar. |
| Stopper | the pages that follow and close each section. |
| End sheet | the paper between the cover and the title page |
| coverage | the number of times and types of people and stories included |
