Data | In general, any information being processed by the computer system. |
Data Document File | The file which contains the unique information (such as names and adresses) to one person or item to be used in a Merge operation. |
DDE | Short for Dynamic Data Exchange, it is the protocol (method of communication) that allows data to be transferred in the background between Windows applications, like Microsoft Word. |
Default | A value assinged or an action taken automatically by a software program unless another is specifie. In some cases, default settings are "facotry settings". |
Delete | To erase or remove data from a document. |
Desktop | Screen background on which appear windows, icons, and dialog boxes. When all windows are minimized, the desktop remains on screen. The desktop is any part of the screen not appearing within a window. |
Dialog box | Rectangular box that requests information or provides command options. |
Directory path | The route from one area on a disk to another through the levels of directories. |

Diskette | a single, flexible disk which is a portable but relatively limited form of data storage. Diskettes are often called "floppies". The most common size of diskettes are 3 1/2" and 5 1/4". Each size is available in high-density, which means that it holds more data than an ordinary floppy. |
Display | The video screen device, often called the "monitor", "console", or the "screen". |
Document | A general term for the files created with a word processor. |
Document window | Window within an application window containing a document created or midified using that application.There can be more than one Document window within an applicationm window. Sometimes called a child window. |
Doccumentation | The collection of books and other materials which explains the use and operation of a software program. |
DOS | Short for Disc Operating System. |
DOS prompt | See prompt. |
Double-click | To quickly press a mouse button twice in succession without moving the mouse. Compare Click. |
Drag | To move an object on screen by pointing at it, then pressing a mouse button (usually the left button) while moving the mouse. |
Drop-down menu | List of command options that drops down from a menu bar. |
Enhance | In word processing, to make specific text stand out from the rest. Examples of text enhancement include underlining and boldface. |
Erase | See delete. |
Extension | See File name extension. |
Enter Key | Key pressed to begin the execution of a command. Also called the "Return key". |
