Feature Bar | A row of pushbuttons that automatically appears when certain functions are selected. |
Field | A category of data used to define a data structure for a merge operation. FIIRST_NAME, LAST_NAME, STREET ADDRESS, CITY, AND STATE are all ecamples of field names. |
File | A convenient collection o related data. Files may be retrieved, opened, processed, updated, closed, moved, renamed, copied, and deleted. |
File name | A letter designation assigned to a file. |
File name extension | An optional one-to-three letter suffix to a DOS file name. |
Find and replace | To look for a specific information and replace it with different data. |
Floppy disc | An informational term for a diskette. |
Font | A set of characters in a particular typeface, available in a range of sizes and a variety of styles. |
Footer | Repeated text which appears at the bottom or "foot" of each printed page. |
Foreground | Area of the screen occupied by the active window. A user interacts with the foreground area. |
Form Letter | A document that results from a merge operation. |
Format | In applications software, the basic layout or appearance of a document, including such things as margins, line spacing, and column width. |
Function keys | Programmable keys whose purposes depends on the software program being used. Usually labeled F1 through F10 (or F12). |
Gigabyte | A thousand million (or a billion in US) bytes. Abbreviated "G" or "GB". |
Graphics | In Word, graphics are objects that can be inserted into a document to add a visual element to your work. They include figures, text boxes, equations, table boxes, and lines. |
Grayed | Command or option that cannot be chosen, or is unavailable, appearing in grey type. By first selecting an item, it may make the command or option available to be chosen. Sometimes called "dimmed". |
Group | Collection of applications in a Program Manager window. Also, a group of options within a dialog box, usually labeled with its own title. |
Handles | Small square appearing on a selected frame or graphic object. You can drag them to change the size of the frame or object. |
Hard disk | An internal, usually non-removable data storage device. Typical capacities range from 550 to over 2 gigabytes. |
Hardware | A general term referring to all the physical and electronic components of the computer system. |
Header | Repeated text which appears at the top or "head" of each printed page. |
Help | In applications softare,a set of instructions or operating reminders whcih can easily be displayed on screen. |
High-density | Diskettes which have increased storage capacity. |
Icon | A graphic symbol or picture used to represent various elements or options. SmartIcons appear on buttons and can be used to issue commands |
Indention | Pushing one or more lines or a paragraph inward from either the left or right margin. |
Input | Any data or information that goes into the computer. Compare output. |
Insert | In insert mode, characters tyed at the insertion point will push existing text to the right as the new characters are typed. See Typeover. |
Insertion point | The place text will appear when you type in a document window or dialog box. Usually displayed as a blinking vertical bar or line. |
Interactive | Requiring input or responses from the user. |
Justification | In word processing, arranging and spacing words and letters such that margins are smooth. Left justification (that is, along the left margin) is common, right justification less so. |
