The Medusa

Perseus was the son of Zeus (king of the gods) and Danae. When he was grown up, he was sent to slay the Medusa a monster who could turn anyone to stone if they looked at her. The Medusa used to be a beautiful maiden but she dared compare herself to Athena who deprived her of her charms and turned her once beautiful hair into hissing serpents. Perseus managed to chop off the Medusa's head by looking at her reflection in his bright shield. The head went to Athena who wore it as a decoration and from the blood which poured on the ground, sprang Pegasus the winged horse - Perseus' companion in many adventures.
