Learning Greek is an adventure into one of the most influential languages in human history, certainly in the history of the Western World. This is the language of the New Testament, and the language in which the very first musings on the meaning and value of democracy were written down. It is the language of drama, philosophy, medicine, science, architecture, culture, and more. It is hard to overestimate the impact of the language, even though some would argue that the high point of Greek civilization lasted a mere 50 years in the middle of the 5th century BC. Nevertheless, this civilization has impacted the world around us in far more ways that you probably recognize right now. The greater your understanding of the Greeks, their language and their world, the more you'll see that they were responsible for much of our own culture today.

BEFORE CLASS BEGINS:

Follow the instructions that Mr. Barr sends to you in the pre-semester instruction email. You must add yourself to the NEW semester class roster to gain access to the PSQ (Pre-Semester Quiz).
Take the Pre-Semester Quiz until you score over an 85 on it. You have 5 attempts. You should start early and study between attempts.

Your instructor uses your email on file in our registration database to email both you and your parent. It is your responsibility to let us know if your email changes, or if we are not using the correct one to correspond with you.

HOMEWORK ADVICE

ALWAYS spend time learning your new vocabulary and grammar BEFORE you do your homework. You'll be amazed at how much better your homework goes and how much more you retain if you do this first. Here's how you do VERY GOOD HOMEWORK:
1. VOCABULARY practice first
2. GRAMMAR study second
3. HOMEWORK reinforces the first two
Cramming doesn't work with languages. You should spend time EVERY DAY on your work. Be sure to practice vocabulary DAILY.
TRANSLATION: You MAY refer to your vocabulary as you do the translation if you cannot remember a word, but you should ALWAYS try to do it from memory first. If you get in the habit of NOT learning and reviewing your vocabulary from memory, it will show on your quizzes, and ultimately in your enjoyment and understanding of Greek.
Do any assigned TRANSLATIONS, TEXTBOOK EXERCISES or WORKBOOK EXERCISES for the section we've just covered in class. Save them in a separate document before entering them into Quia to prevent losing any of your work.
There is no limit to the number of times you can enter the homework activity. Quia has a “Save For Later” function. We do NOT guarantee that this will work correctly. We do NOT provide any make-up or recovery clemency for students claiming that Quia “ate” their work.
You should only "submit" your homework ONCE. When you submit your homework, you can immediately see all the answers so you can check your work. If you submit twice, you've had access to all the correct answers and additional submissions may be counted as cheating.
If you have any questions or experience any problems, send me a note BEFORE the deadline passes.

FONTS

The default font used in Quia (Arial Unicode MS) can be difficult to read. We will use the IFAO-Grec Unicode font. You MUST have this font installed on your computer for the Greek characters to display properly in the homework and quizzes - the link to the download page is below. Even so, Quia will use its default font on any of your answer entry boxes; I cannot change that.
