11α - Practice Augmenting Verbs

The Rules of Augmentation:

  • Verbs beginning with a consonant have ἐ– added to the beginning
  • Verbs beginning with a vowel lengthen that vowel
    • If the verb begins with a vowel that is already long (like ω), it can't be augmented and consequently, there may be no visible augment
  • If the verb is a compound, augmentation happens to THE STEM (BEFORE the preposition)
    • If the prefixed preposition ends with a vowel (like ἀπο- or κατα-) the augment on the verb may replace the final vowel in the prefixed preposition)
