The Same Stuff as Stars by Katherine Patterson is a realistic fiction novel centered around eleven year-old Angel Morgan. Angel's alcoholic mother Verna seems to hate her and her seven year-old brother Bernie. Verna dumps them at Grandma's house, and with Angel's father Wayne in jail, she seems stuck. Angel becomes the adult in the family, being responsible and caring for her brother. All she looks forward to is seeing the mysterious Star Man in the yard. He teaches her about astronomy and reminds her that she is made of the same stuff as stars. This book is great for anybody between the ages of 8 and 15 who needs a bit of perspective.
