Ethyl Alcohol Pathway
Yeast and some bacteria can live indefinitely under anaerobic conditions
by generating ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide. Just like the lactic acid
pathway, the process of reducing pyruvic acid by accepting the hydrogen
and high energy electrons from NADH allows NAD+ to be regenerated. The
NADH can then be used to keep the process of glycolysis going. Unlike
other organisms, anaerobic organisms are able to survive on 2 ATP per
molecule of glucose.
