Lactic Acid Pathway p. 2

When you stop exercising vigorously, you still breath hard for awhile so that the lactic acid buildup in your muscles can be oxidized to convert back into pyruvic acid. The pyruvic acid can then continue on the normal path of aerobic respiration as you catch your breath and bring enough oxygen back into the mitochondria to allow the electron transport system to proceed.
