ONLINE SPANISH I (8th Grade)

Online Spanish I :  Señora Theis     theisr@limashawnee.com

¡Hola, mis estudiantes!  Thanks for your help and effort in making this online experience successful!  Below you will find your online coursework for Spanish I.  Please read the following carefully before beginning:

1.  If you are the type of person that ignores reading directions, explanations, and examples and immediately delves into the activities to get through things as fast as possible, this is very much NOT the time for that!!!  In fact, go back and read that sentence again.   Online instruction means I need to rely on you to show your academic maturity in taking the time to read the info and follow the instructions I give you, as this and the resources I give you ARE your instruction and are not to be missed.

2.  If you have a question or problem, email me at theisr@limashawnee.com.  That's how you or your parents can contact me.

3. *NOTE- Quizzes, tests, and online assigned 'check-ins' do not "open" until when they are assigned, so if it says "Not available" before the date assigned, this is why.  It should become available on the day that I assign it.  This is a good thing because I want you to work poco a poco, little by little, so that this info 'sticks' and nobody just tries to complete it ALL in one big crazy RUSH that won't stay with you. I don't want you to work way ahead of me and the 'check-ins' will help me be sure that you're 'with' me.

If I'm not moving fast enough for you and you want MORE Spanish, check out the regular old"Spanish I" class page website I have below (the red background with the puppies) and there are tons of resources and links to extra materials that are totally optional.

Information / Assignments prior to spring break have been archived.

WEATHER and TEMPERATURE LESSON

1.  Watch my lesson on weather expressions and telling the temperature.  (LINK 40)  Some of you are skipping lessons!  Don´t!  You need to know this information for next year...plus...you did sign up for Spanish to be able to talk about things like this.  When you skip the lessons, you miss a lot of valuable information.

2.  Next, watch my notes presentation.  Copy all of the weather and temperature questions and expressions into your notebook. (LINK 41)

3.  Boogie down with the weather songs.  Listen to all of the weather songs and watch the videos in order to hear and practice these weather expressions.   Listen for the expressions used in today´s lesson.  Links 42, 43, and 44.  Which is your favorite?  ¿Cuál es tu favorito?  How I wish we were in class together so we could sing these as a group!  As you listen, imagine the good ol' days of Señora walking between the rows singing her heart out as loudly as possible.  Maybe then quarantine won´t seem so bad ;-)

4.  After enjoying the fabulous weather songs and listening for our weather expressions, visit link 45 and play the Weather Concentration Game at least twice!  Be sure to have your sound on because they will pronounce the expressions in Spanish and I am trying to get you to hear them over and over as you practice.

-¿Qué tiempo hace? Practice and Listening Quiz

1.  Review the weather presentation vocabulary from Monday.  (link 41)

2.  Listen to the weather song again.  (link 44)

3.  Watch Señora´s Weather Practice video.  (Link 47) (Have your book open to p. 102.)

4.
Use page 103, part 35 to do the weather quiz.  Play link 48.  Link 48 is the listening quiz to listen to.  Number a scrap sheet of paper 1-6.  Write down the letter, A or B, that you need for each as you listen to the quiz (link 48).  Then complete the quiz (Weather Listening-under My Activities and Quizzes) with your answers you just wrote down.  Submit by Friday MORNING, no later than 9 AM to receive credit.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

LUNES, el VEINTISIETE de ABRIL

1.  Re-watch links 40 and 41 on weather expressions.  Note which ones take HACE and which do not.

2.  Play Weather Bomb at link 49 under Useful links.

3. In an email, do text page 103, part 36, #1-10 in complete Spanish sentences, following the model and using correct Spanish spelling, punctuation, and showing that you know when to use HACE and when NOT to use Hace.  Only expressions that you learned from OUR focus lesson (as seen in links 40/41 and text page 102) will be counted.  Online translation tools and having another person give you answers/dictionaries do not practice these focus expressions that you are expected to know for next year and will be viewed as cheating, and will result in a zero for the assignment.  Demonstrate that you know and can use the focus expressions from links 40/41 to receive credit.  Again, spelling must be correct, so copy from links 40/41 carefully.  If you are not sure what the weather is like in those places at those times of the year, you can take an educated guess.  Only answers that demonstrate mastery of our focus expressions from links 40/41 with correct spelling will receive credit.  Use of any other source will result in no credit for the assignment...use OUR lesson and OUR focus expressions.

Email this assignment to me by Friday morning at 11 AM in an email with your real first and last name and class period as the subject line at theisr@limashawnee.com and if you forgot how to do the special characters on your keyboard, check out link 12 for a refresher course.  I want your answers just in an email or shared google doc and not as a photograph that you send, please, so I can see that you do know how to do the special characters as shown in link 12.  Gracias de antemano por seguir las instrucciones.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

miércoles, el 29 de abril

1.  Read/ study link 50 under Useful Links on School vocabulary.

2.  Read/ study text pages 120-122 on school and schedules.

3.  Watch my instructional videos (two) on this information to LISTEN and practice pronunciation/ learn the lesson on how to use this information.   View links 51 and 52 under Useful Links.  Do not skip this!

4.  Do activities 2 and 3 on page 122 aloud...find a place in your home where you feel comfortable for speaking practice aloud.  I gave you samples in my videos.

5.  Read text on Costa Rica in Central America and unit intro, pages 114-119.

6.  By the end of this lesson, you should be able to talk about what school supplies you have and what school supplies you need or do not need for your school subjects.  You should also be able to talk about your school schedule.

Nothing to submit today, but a quiz coming up next week will require you to demonstrate that you know this information.

-----------------------------------------------------
lunes el 4 de mayo

1.  Review link 50...school vocabulary and review notes.
2.  Do a practice self-quiz, using link 53.  When you press submit, it will tell you how you did.  This is a Self Check quiz for Practice for you to use as practice today.
3.  Watch link 54...¿cuál es tu materia favorita?  song.  You won´t understand every single word but you will get the gist, and they will use some slightly different vocabulary but that´s ok!  Just watch and see how much you can recognize or figure out.
4.  Watch link 55...click on the pictures and it will show you an interview.  You can click on the little squares with S for Spanish, E for English subtitles.  Again, you won´t understand everything...that is FINE...just listen to the rhythm and the topic and see what you can catch or figure out!  There are five interviews to watch here.  Watch each one twice.  Again, use the subtitle squares.
5.  Another activity/ quiz coming up on Wednesday.

-------------------------------------------------------------

CINCO DE MAYO:  Celebrates Mexico´s victory over the FRENCH on May 5th, 1862 at the Battle of Puebla and is NOT Mexico´s Independence Day...that happens in September.  Check out link 56 below from NBC News for a short re-cap and to see what people know about this holiday!

miércoles, el 6 de mayo

A)  If you didn´t watch the Cinco do Mayo video referenced above, do so now.

For the following activities, you can either send them to me in an email, share them with me as a google document, or take a photo and send it to me at theisr@limashawnee.com.  Please put your name and class period in the subject line of your email.  REMEMBER, the purpose of this is to practice our TARGET EXPRESSIONS WE ARE WORKING ON FROM CLASS (text and links 50-52, on this web page)...as those are the ones you will need to know for next year.  ******Use of a dictionary is not allowed or needed, use of another person is not allowed or needed, and use of online translation programs is not allowed, not needed, OBVIOUS, and any sign whatsoever of the above on any part of this assignment will result in zero credit on the whole assignment.  USE THE RESOURCES I HAVE GIVEN YOU...this assignment is designed to have you practice those.  Again, any info not from these resources (our text, links 50-56, will result in zero credit for the entire assignment.  So bottom line, don´t use online translation or have someone else do it for you- it is obvious and you will get zero credit.

1.  Read text page 122 at the bottom (blue and yellow...to ask about classes and to respond)  Look at what they mean.  Think about how you would answer those questions for yourself, substituting your information for the responses.  Write your responses.

Examples:   Primero, tengo historia y después tengo hora de estudio (study hall).
Mi materia preferida es inglés.   Es fácil.  No me gusta la clase de español porque la Señora Theis es muy vieja, antipática, fea, y exigente.  (ja ja ja...just kidding of course!)

2.  On page 123, look at the blue schedule in actividad 4.  Pretend that is YOUR schedule (horario).  Answer questions 1-5 below that blue horario (schedule) that appears on page 123 in complete Spanish sentences.  BASE YOUR ANSWERS ON THEIR BLUE SCHEDULE!!!  Not your own real schedule!  Pretend that blue schedule on page 123 is your own and answer questions 1-5 based on it!

HELPFUL TIPS:  ¿Qué? = What?   So ¿Qué clases...?= What classes...etc.

Here is how to set up your answers to help you answer 1-5 correctly based on the blue schedule at the top of page 123.  Spelling must be correct to get full credit.  Use link 50 to help yourself. You can just use my sentence starters below but your spelling has to be correct.

1.  Los lunes por la mañana tengo...
2.  Primero los martes tengo...
3. Tengo educación física los....  (if it is every day, you say todos los días, of course!  If you don´t have it, you simply say, No tengo ...)
4.  Después de química los miércoles tengo...
5.  Tengo (name multiple classES here that you have after almuerzo) los martes.

3.  On page 123, look at part 5, Mis Clases.  Complete the paragraph, describing your OWN schedule (if we were in school)  Write or type out the entire paragraph in Spanish, using any special characters.  You may make up any information you wish to create your dream schedule.  USE YOUR VOCAB LIST FROM LINK 50. Spelling must be correct to get full credit.  Again, type out or write out the ENTIRE paragraph.  Answers only will not receive full credit.

YOU MAY EMAIL ME THIS ASSIGNMENT (theisr@limashawnee.com) anytime between today (Wednesday) tomorrow (Thursday) or Friday morning no later than 11 AM (but it is very simple and I have given you so many starters and samples that it should not take you very long at all.)

Please note that there IS a quiz on Friday to complete and submit below.  It is posted under My Activities and Quizzes.  See below:

4. QUIZ For FRIDAY, el 8 de mayo...
By 11:59pm on Friday, May 8th, please complete the easy open note/open book matching quiz that I have posted about school/school schedule/etc. over links 50-52 and text pages 120-123. Again, due by 11:59pm Friday night.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

lunes, el once de mayo y martes, el doce de mayo:

TENER IDIOMS and OBLIGATION, VENIR, QUINCEAÑÉRA NOTES/LESSONS

1.  Review and watch notes/lesson links 57, 58, 59, 60, and 61.  Copy notes carefully in tu cuaderno de español about each.  Afterwards, you should have good notes over tener idioms, obligation (what you HAVE TO do), venir (to come), and know about the Quinceañera tradition.

2.  You will be using your notes to take a big open note comprehension check quiz later this week or early next week, so do be sure to visit each link and take careful notes to use over this.  If you do not take notes, you will not have anything to use on the quiz!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

miércoles, el trece de mayo:

Today you will learn about the irregular verbs (verbs that do not follow a pattern) that you are responsible for knowing before Spanish II next year.

1.  Go to link 62 and read the Irregular Verbs presentation.

2.  Next, go through the presentation again and copy all of the notes it into your Spanish notebook

3.  Be sure you include the following in your notes:

A) Each verb, its meaning, its conjugation along with the subject pronouns (yo, tú, él, nosotros, etc.)  All forms must be spelled exactly correctly, so copy carefully.

B) What is personal A? Copy the two sample sentences from the presentation in your notes and circle the personal A in them.

C) What is the difference in use between SABER and CONOCER?  They both mean TO KNOW.  Explain how they are different.

E) Which of these verbs have a YO form that ends in -GO while all of its other forms are normal?

F) Make a sentence using a form of each of these 12 irregular verbs in each and write it at the bottom of your notes for that verb.

4.  When your notes are finished, go to link 63 and practice with the YO forms of these verbs on Quizlet.    You will be responsible for knowing the meanings of these verbs and how to conjugate them in Spanish II next year.

5.
You will use the lessons and notes you took from today and Monday to practice all next week, so be sure to take excellent detailed notes!  Nothing to submit today, but quizzes with notes next week...be sure to take great notes so you have resources to use.

3.  Take the online quiz under My Activities and Quizzes.  Submit by 11:59 pm Tuesday night.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

miércoles, el veinte de mayo

1.  Review the irregular verbs links (62 and 63) from last week and be sure you have copied the notes into your Spanish notebook to use on the test today.

2.  Use the notes you took to complete the irregular verbs test under My Activities and Quizzes.

3.  Submit this irregular verbs test no later than 11:59 pm on Thursday night.

You get one chance, with your notes, so be ready!  Spelling counts.  This is to test your knowledge over  the irregular verbs presentation from link 62.  Again, look over the presentation again prior to taking the test and yes, you CAN use your notes!

One Semester of Spanish Love Song

Did you know that one year of HS Spanish is about the equivalent of one semester of college Spanish?
A man made a love song using only the basic Spanish that he had learned in one semester of college Spanish.  It goes over many of the things that you learned this year as well!
Check out link #67, the One Semester of Spanish Love Song to review some material from our year in a fun way!  Hopefully YOU remembro how to say eleven!  (ONCE)

And for your viewing pleasure, take one last look at Billy La Bufanda.  It´s at link 36.

I hope you have un verano fabuloso!  Congratulations on becoming freshmen!  When you are at high school next year, drop by our room and say hola...and if you need any help finding a room, you know where mine is...come find me and I will help you!!!
Also, should we have Spanish Club next year, sign up because I would love to see you!

Hasta luego, mis estudiantes :-)
