Please print the East Asia map and bring it to the next class. We will be filling it out in class.

PARENTS AND STUDENTS, PLEASE READ THIS:
Please don't panic. You have to remember, a few months ago you were in 8th grade and now you're in a COLLEGE LEVEL course. Of course there is going to be an adjustment period. Now I hope you believe me when I say this is not like middle school. It's not that it's hard, it's just challenging and different. You have to study a new way. (Some of you just have to study!) The sheet I posted on how to have the best success will really help with this. Go over it and take it to heart. And also remember, I'm available every morning before school for extra help.

I would expect you would have taken notes on (at minimum) the first Key Issue of chapter 2. And don't forget to print that East Asia map and bring it to class.
See you Tuesday!

p.s. The FRQ will be posted when I'm done grading them. They take a bit longer.

Don't forget, your Chapter 2 test is next week:
Monday, Sept 24 for period 5
Tuesday, Sept 25 for period 2

Here are the topics being considered for your FRQ:
Demographic Transition Model
Population Pyramids
Population Clusters

REMEMBER: you're only doing ONE of these. The test will consist of 50 m/c, 20 vocab, and 1 FRQ

PLEASE don't wait until the last minute to get your questions answered. Do it before the weekend!

Here is an addition to the notes on Population.
The following are expansive and restrictive population policies, a.k.a. Pro and Anti Natalist policies:
Population policies

IT'S A LITTLE DISTRESSING TO GO TO MY WEBSITE THIS MORNING AND SEE LESS THAN HALF THE STUDENTS HAVE LOOKED THERE SINCE I SENT A REMIND TELLING YOU TO DO SO TWO DAYS AGO.
I sent a remind telling you the FRQ topics were posted. That was on Tuesday, Sept 18, and I had 42 hits to my site as of Sept 20. I have 85 AP students. Not good!!!!

If you're not receiving the Remind messages, see me as soon as possible!

Here are your FRQ topics by period:
Period 2 - Demographic Transition Model
There's an A,B,C,and D part to the question
Make sure you know the characteristics of each stage

Period 5 - Population Clusters
Yours also has an A,B,C, and D part
And you also have to know the characteristics of each cluster.

If you've been studying these topics, you'll be fine! Good luck!

Hello. Here are your FRQ topics.
Immigration flows of the United States
Global Immigration flows

I'll decide which class gets which this coming week.

Also, don't forget, like I said in class, there is NO WORD BANK for the vocab for this test.

Here are the updated test dates:
Period 5 - Monday, 10/15 and Wed, 10/17
Period 2 - Tues, 10/16 and Thurs, 10/18.
The first testing day you'll take the multiple choice and vocab
The second test day you'll take the FRQ and push-pull factor questions.

Your Chapter 3 test will consist of:
55 multiple choice, 20 vocab, 10 push-pull questions, and 1 FRQ

EXTRA CREDIT FOR SPIRIT WEEK:
On Friday, Oct 12, if you come to school dressed in West Broward Bobcat attire, you will receive extra credit. If your class does not meet that day you must stop by my room BEFORE school, DURING lunch, or AFTER school ONLY.
PLEASE do not come by our room during class time.

CLARIFICATION:
Quite a few are asking about Friday and what to wear. Here's what I mean by "Bobcat attire". I'm looking for school spirit. Everyone should have, at a minimum, a p.e. shirt. That counts. If you don't have a West Broward shirt you can dress in West Broward colors.
NOTE:
Just because you have a "blue" color on your watch, or your socks, or there's a blue thread on your shirt, that DOES NOT count as school spirit.
If you're still not clear, come by before Friday and see me and I'll explain it to you.

Print the following map. We will be filling it out during the next class

Here is your Africa map

Here is the word bank for the Africa map

CONGRATULATIONS!!!
You've finished your first quarter of a college level course!!!
The grades have been entered. After this quarter you should now know what to expect ,be clear on the expectations, and be familiar with the make up of tests and quizzes. Traditionally, the second quarter is better for most students. (Well, only really the ones who believe me and follow the recommendations and suggestions I've laid out since the beginning of the year!) It's all about time management in our class. Remember, you can ALWAYS come see me in the mornings to receive extra help and get your questions answered.
Parents, ask your child if they come to "Breakfast Club" on a regular basis. ONLY 5 or so come all the time. And quite frankly, those are the ones who have seen an improvement in their results!

I will expect you to come to class next week (Week of Oct 22) having taken notes on Key Issues 1 and 2 of chapter 9

The following are the test and quiz dates for the 2nd quarter:

The date of this test will depend upon when periods 2 and 5 take their exams. It has always been the week before Christmas Break, Dec 17-21
**NOTE: Test dates are subject to change due to unforeseen circumstances **

Here are the FRQ topics for the Chapter 9 test:

Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
I clearly understand and appreciate the benefit of Take Your Child to Work Day and encourage my students to accompany their parents to work. However, I find that many students are just treating this day as an extra day off from learning. I surveyed my students and asked how many of them missed school in middle school on TYCWD. The MAJORITY of them raised their hands. When I then asked how many actually went to work with their parent, the MAJORITY put their hands down. I treat this day like a regular school day. Learning WILL be taking place in our class. And if a test or quiz happens to fall on that day, like it is this year, we will be having the test. In a college level class like this we cannot afford to lose time. As is stated in our syllabus, if a test is missed, the make-up test will be of the exact content, but could be of a different format.
Thank you for your continued support with your child in our class. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely,
Mr. Rodrigues

p.s. Period 2, your FRQ is that day. You can always come to school, take the FRQ, and then go to "work" with your parent. If not, you can always take the make-up FRQ.

Here is a WONDERFUL review of EVERYTHING you could ever want to know about AP Human Geography! There's about 65 pages. We WILL be going over this during Review Week before the AP test. In the meantime, you SHOULD look at the pages that correspond with the units/chapters we are studying now.
AP Big Review

I would specifically check out pages 23,24,and 25 for chapter 6 and page 21, 22, and 26 for chapter 4

Page 24 (Religion) is a HUGE help for the test we're taking next week as is page 26 (Pop/folk)

HERE ARE THE TEST DATES FOR CHAPTERS 5 & 7: Period 2 - 2/26 and 2/28
Period 5 - 2/27 and 3/1
I'll decide closer to the dates which portion you'll take on which days.

HERE ARE YOUR FRQ TOPICS:
Chapter 5 - Language of International Trade and Commerce
Chapter 7 - Ethicities in the U.S.

READ THE FOLLOWING CAREFULLY:
On Monday, Feb 11 and Tuesday, Feb 12, I will be offering "Fix-It Day". On those two days you can come during study hall and "fix" any incorrect multiple choice questions from the Chapter 4 & 6 test.
Here is the way it's going to work:
1. This is only being offered 2/11 and 2/12,
2. You can ONLY come during your study hall.
3. You must get a pass for your study hall teacher BEFORE SCHOOL ONLY. (starting tomorrow 2/8)
3. Please do not interrupt my class to get your pass. I WILL NOT give passes during class time.
4. For every question you "fix", you will receive 1/2 a point added to your multiple choice grade.

The following contains a list of the only things you'll need to know from Chapter 7
All you need to know from Ch 7

Just to repeat what I sent out on REMIND:

There will be a "fix-it day" for the Ch 5&7 multiple choice on Thurs (3/7) and Friday 3/8.
You can ONLY "fix-it" ONE of those days.
It will be between 7:00 and 7:30 so plan accordingly.
You are responsible for maximizing your time. Arrive early.

p. 246 MacKinder’s Heartland Theory

pages 248 – 252 Supranational organizations

The following is the flyer for the County AP Review that is put out every year.
I'm always asked if this is something worth attending.
If you would like to get the perspective of the course from a teacher whose class you do not attend, if the cost ($12.00) is not an issue, and if you don't have anything to do for two hours on a Saturday, then I say "Go or it!".

If however you cannot attend, don't worry about it. I do an EXTENSIVE review (multiple days) before the test. Everything you'll need to know regarding the taking of the test I'll go over. Bottom line, it's up to you.
If after you've read the flyer and you have any questions about it, don't hesitate to contact me.

Gotta know vocab

These terms, along with the 67 page review I put up a month ago is what is going to get you to pass the AP test.
The test is a month away. If you haven't started, you REALLY need to start looking at that review NOW.
We WILL be going over it during the review week but you SHOULD be going over it on your own.
Well.....only if you want to pass the AP test and save your parents 1000s of dollars!!!
(That was for you parents!!! See, I'm looking out for you. Isn't that nice of me? Now stay on them and have them take 15 minutes a day to look over it.)
By the way, ALL of the previous 54 FRQs given on the test day can be found in that review. Just sayin'....

Here are some things you need to know from the black book for chapter 13:

You'll have to go to Chapter 9 in the black book to get the info you need to know which equates to Chapter 13 from the white book
Know the following vocab from Ch 9 in the black book:

UNCLOS FRQ
Here is a list of all the past FRQs and from which Unit they came
FRQs by Topic

Ok, this is it! You're ready! Please do the following:
Get a good night's sleep on Monday.
Eat something good before coming to school.
Bring a snack and drink for half-time (the break in between MC and FRQ)
Bring a minimum of 2 sharpened pencils w/ erasers
Have two pens. Black or blue ink ONLY.
It's cold in the gym. Bring a sweater or jacket
Meet me outside the gym between 11:15 - 11:20. You have to be in by 11:30
Bring a watch so you know how much time you have left
And don't forget to PEANUT BUTTER AND JELLY!

While I can't say exactly what the FRQs are going to be, I CAN tell you, with great confidence, they will most definitely come from something from the 67 page review I posted 2 months ago. All 54 past FRQs can be found in that review.

And most importantly, don't freak out! This is just one of MANY tests you're going to take in your life. This one test WILL NOT define who you are, regardless of what you score. So don't sweat it. You're going to be a better person because you took this class. You know more about the world around you because of this class. You're going to be a better student in the future because of the study habits and rigor you learned in this class. And you're going to be a better person because of the life lessons you learned in this class. Those things will always be way more important than one test you take, on one day, in one snap-shot in time.
I believe in you and am proud of you all!
Peace and love,
Mr Rod
