The PLC was invented in response to the needs of the automotive manufacturing industry.

automotive industry where software revision replaced the re-wiring of hard-
wired control panels when production models changed.

manufacturing automobiles was accomplished using hundreds or thousands
of relays, timers, and dedicated closed-loop controllers.
