13 JANUARY 2010. Hello Everyone and a very happy new year. I was very happy to see some faces from last term in class this morning. A warm welcome to the new students. Today we did some introduction exercises. We then talked about "travelling". Please see ABECEDAIRE DES VOYAGES for some vocabulary on the theme and read the article on film director Louis Malle talking about the best journey of his lifeLOUIS MALLE. the homework for next week is to list 20 or so questions Daniele Heymann, the journalist who wrote the article might have asked Louis Malle (ex: Quel a ete le plus beau voyage de votre vie? 20 JANUARY. Today we did lesson 21 in Taxi and had a close look at the past participle (with "etre" the past participle agrees with the subject - ex: elle est allee, il est alle, - with "avoir" the past participle agrees with the direct object complement when it is placed before the verb- ex: les villes que j'ai preferees sont toutes en Asie). For homework please do exercise 2 (lesson 21) in the "cahier d'exercices". After the mid morning break we watched a video called "le slip c'est chic" from TV5 7 jours sur la planete (see 6th link below and click on yellow tab "regarder la sequence" in the top right corner to watch the video :-). Bonjour tout le monde! Today we have met our new best friend : Le Subjonctif! We use the Subjonctif what we want to express the obligation, the doubt, the will, a wish etc, ex: Je veux que tu fasses tes devoirs, or , Je voudrais que tu fasses tes devoirs (I would like you to do your homework, or I want you to do your homework). What is important to remember is that in order to use the subjonctif you must have 2 different subjects in the sentence, for instance if you want to say : "I want to go to Paris" you will say in French "Je veux aller a Paris", you can not use the subjonctif because "You" want and "you" go to Paris, "you" is the same subject for both verbs "want" and "go", so in French you must then say "Je veux aller a Paris". But if you say "I want you to go to Paris", you have 2 different subjects "I" and "you" therefore in French you can (and you must!) use the subjonctif and say "Je veux que tu ailles a Paris". Simple non?!?
The homework for next class is too do all the exercises on both documentsSUBJONCTIF 1 and SUBJONCTIF 2. If you don't feel too at ease with "Le Subjonctif" don't worry and ask me all your questions in class. Je vous souhaite une bonne fin de semaine. A mercredi. Patricia
