Step 3: This step is
very similar to the conversion of pyruvate to acetyl-CoA in the
transition phase. It involves a large multienzyme complex called
the alpha-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex. The end result is
that co-enzyme A is added to our molecule as carbon dioxide is removed
to form a 4 carbon molecule called succinyl CoA.
Succinyl CoA helps regulate the alpha-ketoglutarate
dehydrogenase complex when supplies of succinyl CoA are high. The
excess succinyl CoA acts as an inhibitor, providing feedback that
slows the Kreb's Cycle as needed.
