Step 4: This step is very similar to step 1. Succinyl-CoA reacts with water, and releases the Coenzyme A to form succinic acid. This reaction releases enough energy to form an ATP. The removal of coenzyme A actually allows a molecule of GDP (guanine diphosphate) to be phosphorylated to GTP (guanine triphosphate). The GTP quickly turns over its 3rd phosphate group to ADP resulting in a molecule of ATP and GDP. The enzyme responsible is succinyl-CoA synthetase.
